Art therapy/psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication. Within this context, art is not used as diagnostic tool but as a medium to address emotional issues which may be confusing and distressing.

Psychotherapy more…

Art therapists work with children, young people, adults and the elderly. Clients may have a wide range of difficulties, disabilities or diagnoses. These include emotional, behavioural or mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, life-limiting conditions, neurological conditions and physical illnesses. It is a unique creative process where art-making and psychotherapy combine to aid individual growth, awareness and healing. In art therapy no art skills are required – you are free to make images which provide a more tangible and immediate way to express feelings and emotions. The aim is to release creativity, ease distress, increase awareness, resolve conflicts, and/or cope with trauma. Art therapy can help you to manage and resolve emotional problems, recover from trauma, resolve relationship difficulties, improve self-esteem, bereavement, depression, anxiety, feeling stuck, health problems and general life struggles.

Art Psychotherapy is very useful for clients who may be seeking psychotherapy or counselling and want to explore their issues through this creative approach. The making of art by its very nature is healing. By engaging in the non-verbal process you can discover new insights and self-understanding, supported by the art therapist who guides you through the process. It is a supportive experience and the content of the sessions, as well as the artwork, is kept safe and confidential.

Today, Art Psychotherapy is not only an effective therapy for emotional difficulties but it is also something people are turning to for personal and creative development. Recently it has been attracting people who simply want to have a pleasurable and insightful experience. You don’t have to have psychological problems to benefit from art therapy. It is life enhancing for people of all ages and all walks of life.

Art therapy is provided in groups or individually, depending on clients' needs. It is not a recreational activity or an art lesson, although the sessions can be enjoyable. Clients do not need to have any previous experience or expertise in art.

Art therapy/psychotherapy is a protected term and all art therapists (minimum requirement) must have completed a masters in art therapy. We are also required to be registered with the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC) and be appropriately insured to practice.
